In a heartfelt message to Kenyans, President William Ruto has called for caution and discipline during the festive season, urging moderation to prevent the tragic consequences of overindulgence. Speaking at a Christmas service in Olpisiai, Narok County, Ruto acknowledged the joy of the season but warned that reckless behavior could lead to accidents, injuries, and even fatalities.
Ruto emphasized the importance of parents being actively involved in guiding their children during this time, particularly in protecting them from the dangers of drug and substance abuse, which often spike during the holidays.
His call comes as the country faces an uptick in travel and festivities, which are frequently accompanied by a rise in road accidents and substance misuse. Tragically, just hours before Ruto’s speech, a horrific crash on the Narok-Suswa highway claimed seven lives and left others injured. The accident involved six vehicles, including a trailer, a bus, and a matatu, with the collision caused by careless driving.
This tragedy highlights the growing concern over road safety in Kenya, where an alarming 4,000 lives are lost annually due to traffic-related accidents. Ruto’s remarks serve as a timely reminder to stay safe and responsible as the country celebrates the holiday season.
