The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has opened an investigation into the recent abductions of four individuals allegedly connected to AI misinformation. The move comes after a concerning rise in abduction cases reportedly involving officers from the National Police Service (NPS).
The IPOA has called on Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to urgently address this troubling trend. In a statement, the Authority stressed that it is the responsibility of the NPS to ensure the safety of all citizens and protect them from illegal acts such as abductions.
The victims, identified as Bill Mwangi, Peter Muteti Njeru, Bernard Kavuli, and an unnamed individual, were abducted across several counties, including Embu, Nairobi, and Kajiado, in December 2024. The incidents, which have garnered significant media attention, have prompted IPOA to deploy Rapid Response Teams to the affected areas to investigate the possible involvement of police officers.
IPOA has vowed to take swift action, including recommending prosecution or disciplinary measures if any wrongdoing is found. The Authority has also promised transparency, pledging to publicly share its findings and any actions taken. It emphasized its commitment to maintaining impartiality and upholding constitutional standards in holding law enforcement accountable.
