One person was killed in a dramatic shootout between police officers and suspected cattle rustlers in Isiolo County on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. The gunfire erupted during a police operation to recover livestock stolen by bandits from the Kiwanja area, which had been plagued by cattle rustling.
The National Police Service (NPS) seized two firearms and 19 heads of cattle from the criminals. After receiving urgent calls from locals reporting the theft, a multi-agency security team was dispatched to track down the suspects. Upon being confronted, the bandits opened fire on the officers, prompting a return of gunfire that led to the civilian fatality.
The recovered cattle are now being returned to their rightful owners. This incident is part of the ongoing "Maliza Uhalifu" operation, which aims to curb cattle rustling and recover illegal firearms across the North Eastern Region of Kenya, with notable success in restoring peace to affected areas. The operation involves a coordinated effort of police, military, and National Police Reserve forces.
