Joho Launches New Unit to Combat Illegal Mining in Kenya

The Kenyan government is taking a stronger stance against illegal mining with the launch of a new investigative unit within the Mining Police. Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho unveiled the unit on Wednesday, aimed at tackling illegal exploration and mineral extraction both within the country and abroad.

Joho emphasized that minerals are a valuable resource meant to benefit the Kenyan people not only today but for future generations. He stressed that illegal mining is akin to theft, which damages the economy and robs future prosperity.

The new unit will be led by Fatuma Ali, a seasoned police officer previously in charge of the Kilimani District Criminal Investigations Office. Joho assured the public that anyone involved in illegal mining would face severe consequences, including arrest and prosecution. He also urged mining companies to collaborate with local communities and county governments, ensuring they pay appropriate royalties and wages.

Illegal mining, particularly the smuggling of minerals, has cost Kenya billions of shillings, often with foreign involvement. The newly formed Mining Police Unit, which has been in operation since April 2024, is empowered to pursue offenders under the Mining Act 2016. Penalties for violating mining laws include fines of up to Sh10 million, imprisonment for up to two years, or both.
