Martha Karua Cleared to Defend Kizza Besigye in Ugandan Court Martial

The Uganda Law Council has officially granted Martha Karua, leader of the Narc Kenya party, a practicing certificate to represent opposition figure Kizza Besigye at a Court Martial scheduled for Tuesday. This follows Besigye's controversial arrest in Kenya and subsequent court-martialling in Uganda.

The decision was reached unanimously by the council members after Karua’s appeal to the Law Society President, Isaac Ssemakadde. The closed-door meeting, chaired by Court of Appeal Justice Irene Mulyagonja, barred media access.

Karua, a prominent Kenyan lawyer and politician, is set to lead Besigye’s defense in a case that has drawn significant regional attention. Besigye, a longtime critic of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, was allegedly abducted in Kenya and transported to Uganda, where he now faces military charges alongside his associate, Lutale.

This decision marks a significant turn of events, coming just weeks after the Uganda Law Council had initially denied Karua a practice license.
