President William Ruto has appointed former Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa as the new non-executive chairperson of the Kenya Roads Board, signaling a continued effort to reward key political allies.
Jumwa’s appointment, which takes effect from January 17, 2025, will last for three years. This move is part of Ruto's ongoing political reshuffling and comes after Jumwa was removed from the Cabinet in July 2023.
In an official Gazette notice, President Ruto invoked powers under the Kenya Roads Board Act, marking Jumwa’s return to government service in a prominent role. The notice stated, “In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 7 (1) (a) of the Kenya Roads Board Act, as read together with Section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Aisha Jumwa Katana to be the non-executive Chairperson of the Kenya Roads Board, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from January 17, 2025.”
Additionally, Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya appointed Millicent Omanga to the Board of Directors of the Kenya Shipyard Limited. Omanga’s appointment follows previous attempts to involve her in government roles, which included a short-lived appointment to the Nairobi Rivers Commission in October 2024, which she declined due to personal reasons. Her tenure with the Kenya Shipyard Board officially began on January 14, 2025.
Omanga's government journey includes her prior appointment as Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) in the Ministry of Interior in March 2023. However, this position was declared unconstitutional by the High Court in June 2023, leading to the nullification of all CAS appointments, including hers.
In the same announcement, CS Tuya reappointed Maryanne Karanja for another three-year term on the Kenya Shipyard Board.
These appointments highlight Ruto's ongoing strategy of placing trusted allies in key positions across various boards and state institutions.
