Ruto Faces Growing Calls for Resignation Over Rising Abductions

Nyandarua Senator John Methu has called for President William Ruto's resignation amid increasing reports of abductions, a stance that aligns him with the opposition.

In a sharp statement shared with Kenyans.co.ke, Methu, who is associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, is the first from Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to publicly demand the president step down.

Methu criticized Ruto for losing moral authority, claiming that the president's actions had undermined the nation's Christian values and breached the Constitution. He argued that Ruto’s continued leadership failure warrants his immediate resignation.

The senator’s comments come after revelations by Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, who claimed Ruto personally intervened in securing the release of his son, Leslie, who was abducted during anti-government protests in 2024.

Muturi alleged that his son had been taken by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and was freed only after Ruto called NIS Director-General Noordin Haji.

Methu argued that these revelations indicate the presence of an illegal abduction squad operating outside the law, which Methu believes reflects poorly on Ruto’s leadership. Despite initially denying the existence of abductions, President Ruto acknowledged them late last year and pledged to end the practice in his New Year’s address.

However, no arrests have been made, and investigations into the abductions are still ongoing.
