After weeks of fear and uncertainty, Gerald Karicha, the father of Billy Mwangi, finally has a reason to smile. Billy, who was abducted on December 21, returned home safely early Monday morning, marking the end of a deeply traumatic experience for his family.
In an emotional interview, Karicha shared the relief and joy his family felt when Billy walked through the door at around 8:00 a.m., appearing physically unharmed.
"Our son is here, and he is okay. We are still overwhelmed with happiness because it was such a painful experience. For now, we are focusing on celebrating his safe return and will address the rest later," he said.
The 24-year-old was warmly embraced by his mother, bringing tears of joy to the family. The community of Embu, alongside activists and local leaders, had rallied together, demanding his release and the safe return of five others who went missing under mysterious circumstances just days before Christmas.
Among those leading the charge was Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, who kept his promise to stage protests. Demonstrators paralyzed activities in Embu on December 27, calling for the abductees' freedom.
Speaking after Billy’s release, MP Mukunji revealed shocking details of the young man’s ordeal.
"Preliminary reports show that Billy was subjected to severe torture. He was whipped and kept in a dark room. He is seriously traumatized and is currently receiving medical care," the lawmaker disclosed.
Mukunji condemned the abductions, calling for legal reforms to prevent such incidents in the future.
"Let this be the last time a family has to endure such pain. The law is clear on how individuals should be treated, and this was nothing more than an attempt to instill fear. We will not tolerate lawlessness or any actions that undermine Kenya's Constitution," he stated firmly.
Billy’s abduction followed his controversial online activity, including AI-generated images of President William Ruto. While he has now been reunited with his family, two others, including cartoonist Kibet Bull and Steve Mbisi, remain missing.
Billy’s safe return coincided with the planned #EndAbductionsKe protests, a movement demanding justice and an end to enforced disappearances. As the nation celebrates his return, calls for accountability and stronger protections against abductions grow louder.
For now, Gerald Karicha and his family are cherishing their son’s homecoming, grateful for the prayers and support from their community and beyond. But the fight for justice continues.
