Uganda Law Society Investigates Imprisonment of Besigye's Lawyer

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has launched an inquiry into the nine-month imprisonment of Eron Kiiza, the lawyer for opposition leader Kizza Besigye, by the General Court Martial. The ULS, acknowledging public concern, emphasized its commitment to ensuring fair legal processes.

On January 7, 2025, Kiiza was sentenced after a confrontation in court, where he was barred from entering the lawyer's bar. The court proceedings were chaotic, and Kiiza was denied a chance to defend himself or receive a proper hearing.

In response, the ULS is taking immediate action with three fact-finding teams. The first will visit Kiiza at Kitalya Government Prison to investigate his conditions. The second will engage with the General Court Martial and consult with legal experts. The third will meet with Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo to push for a swift ruling on a key case impacting military court jurisdiction over civilians.

The ULS assures the public that it will conduct a thorough review of Kiiza’s case and its wider implications, releasing a detailed statement once the investigations are complete.
