In today’s digital age, charging your phone overnight has become second nature for most of us. We plug our devices in before bed, only to wake up to a fully charged battery. However, what many don’t realize is that this nightly routine might be impacting both your electricity bill and your device's longevity.
Kenya Power recently clarified this in a post on social media, debunking the myth that charging your phone overnight doesn’t waste energy. While modern smartphones are equipped with smart charging features that stop the charging process once the battery reaches full capacity, they still draw small amounts of power throughout the night. Over time, these tiny energy consumption spikes can add up, leading to higher electricity costs.
The energy consumption is minimal but significant enough to notice on your utility bill. To avoid this, Kenya Power recommends unplugging your phone once it’s fully charged or using smart plugs that automatically cut off the power supply when the device reaches 100%.
Besides the financial cost, overnight charging can also pose safety risks. Continuous charging can generate heat, and in extreme cases, may even lead to fires. It's best not to place your phone under pillows or pile objects on top of the charger to prevent overheating.
To ensure your device’s health and your wallet’s well-being, it's worth reconsidering the habit of charging your phone overnight. If you're looking to extend your phone's battery life and keep energy costs down, consider unplugging your charger once the device is fully powered.
