Babu Owino Demands Answers from Tanzania’s President Suluhu After Airport Detention

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has sent a formal demand letter to Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, requesting an explanation for his detention at Julius Nyerere International Airport in December 2024. Owino, who was denied entry into Tanzania and placed on a "persona non grata" list, is seeking clarification on the reasons behind the ban, stressing his rights as both an East African citizen and a Kenyan Member of Parliament.

In the letter dated February 3, Owino expressed his frustration over what he called a violation of his rights to freedom of movement, referencing international human rights laws and the East African Community's provisions for free movement among its citizens. He also claimed that his name was erroneously placed on Interpol’s most wanted list, which led to his detention.

Owino concluded the letter by requesting an apology from President Suluhu, asserting that the situation was a grave mistake.
