What Maragoli Men Must Do With Their Sisters After Being Circumcised

If you are a Maragoli man who has not yet been circumcised, you must first follow the Tiriki laws.

These are special rules followed by the Maragoli and Tiriki people before a boy becomes a man.

After the circumcision is done, the young man must spend time with his sister. They must pray together. This prayer is important. It shows peace, love, and blessings for the new man. After the prayer, the young man must help his sister to prepare food for the family. This food is a sign of thanksgiving and respect.

The food is cooked in the home. The sister plays a big role. She helps her brother understand family traditions. Together, they prepare ugali, vegetables, and meat. The food is shared with the whole family and even neighbors. Everyone eats together to celebrate the boy’s journey into manhood.

Before this day, the boy must also stay in a special place called “isanda.” This is a hidden place where boys are kept after circumcision. They stay there to heal and to learn. Elders teach them how to respect others, how to work hard, and how to care for their families. The sister is not allowed in this place. She waits at home until her brother comes back.

When the boy finally returns home, his sister is the first to greet him. This is not just a normal greeting. It shows that she accepts him as a new man. She ties a small cloth or string on his wrist or neck. This cloth is blessed and protects the young man from bad luck.

After this, the sister must also give her brother a small gift. It can be a handmade item or some coins. The gift is small, but it means a lot. It shows love, support, and unity. The Maragoli people believe that without this moment between the sister and brother, the boy’s journey is not complete.

These steps help to keep the Maragoli culture strong. They teach boys and girls to respect each other and to carry on the ways of their people.
